A July Favorite

Incredible as it seems it's the middle of July already (where did June go?) and the gardens are bursting with color. This is the peak bloom time for my gardens when all the summer beauties are pushing out flowers at an amazing rate. My absolute favorite of all the blooms strutting their stuff at the moment are the extravagant Tarragona Orienpet lilies that grow in my Sundial Garden. I look forward to their flawless blossoms every year and they never disappoint.  The back gardens are redolent with their wonderful fragrance and they command attention from every view in the back yard.  I especially love them in combination with the Heliopsis helianthoides (smooth oxeye) and yellow Hemerocallis (daylily).

A view from the second floor of the house

A clump of several stems by the birdbath in morning light... sigh...

And a few close-ups

Now if there were just some way I could post a 'scratch and sniff' patch so I could share their fragrance.....

  1. Those photos were so real that I swear I could smell the lilies. No scratch and sniff needed. Luscious.

  2. I need to find some great supports for mine. Otherwise, they're perfect! I can smell them from the opposite side of the property. Fabu-Fabu!

    1. Thanks Marie, I think Kathy uses rebar for her Silk Road lilies and they work really well. These don't need much because the stalks are very sturdy but I use bamboo stakes for the other lilies like Casa Blanca and Regale

  3. I love these, Deanne, and your pictures really bring them to life! If it wasn't for the damn lily beetle I would plant more lilies but at this point I've pretty much given up on them :(. But I have your to enjoy!

    1. I so know what you mean Sue. The lily beetles make one want to give up on growing these beauties. They went from a no fail garden staple to a high maintenance plant in the borders. Between the voles, chipmunks and lily beetles I feel like giving up at times

  5. Well Deanne, you are going to have to keep the dayliles in these photos lest you ruin the combos!

    1. LOL Kathy, I know, these daylilies are going to have to stay for the time being. I'm hoping to figure out a way to keep the voles from eating these beauties

    1. Thanks Gayle, they really are fabulous. The substance of these flowers is the heaviest I've seen on any lilium

  7. Fabu, Deanne -- it does make me want to smell each and every bloom -- you have "Bloom Day" Going Bust in your Gardens -- simply stunning - and the photos as well. The best time of the Summer - I can just imagine. cindy h.
