Back Yard Gardens - End of August

It seems I've blinked my eyes and another month has gone by! Seriously, where has this summer gone? It seems only a couple weeks ago I was in my glory in a frenzy of buying annuals and assembling container gardens for the season. How could that possibly be three months ago? Pouff, the seasons are flowing by and summer is coming to its end of season crescendo of color.  I spent a bit of time snapping some images from the back gardens the other morning when we had a bit of overcast so perfect light for recording the blaze of colors to store up to enjoy in the winter months.

The highlight of the terrace garden this time of year is the beautiful clump of Phlox paniculata 'Nora Leigh'.  I recently added a Weigela 'My Monet' to the left of the phlox and am really enjoying the variegation in that area of the garden.

The Fuchsia 'Billy Greene' is the highlight of this large urn at the left of the left of the terrace garden... What a beauty!

Standing at the patio looking toward the west fence line...

Container gardens on the west fence line... I absolutely adore those variegated Sunpatiens

The vignette with the large hanging basket and a couple large fuchsias...

Shade gardens looking north

The sundial garden and terrace garden showing the Hydrangea petiolaris on the oak tree.  The chartreuse arrangement in the foreground of this picture is a container garden I've recently moved to this location to fill a void from a daylily that's finished up for the season.  I absolutely adore that acalypha!

A grouping of containers on the patio. The large Acalypha wilkesiana 'Obovata' is about five years old now and is one of the temperennials I grow on under lights over the winter.

I'll have to get some shots of the tropical containers in the front gardens soon... The hot summer has spurred them to incredible growth and beauty. Just can't believe this is all going to be gone in another six weeks or so. Sigh....

  1. What type of stone did you use to lay out your patio's main flooring? The red stone is gorgeous. It sets a very natureful and natural feel as opposed to grey.

    1. The patio flooring is stamped concrete... It was installed eleven years ago and still looks great.

  3. I can certainly see the artistry in your beautiful plantings. Have you posted on overwintering under lights? I am going to give that a try this year.

  4. Incredible garden! You grow so many cool plants & your layering of color and texture is fabulous! Yours is quite a delightful departure from many of the gardens I remember seeing in your neck of the woods when I visited. Thanks for sharing these gorgeous pictures; can't wait to see the tropical containers!

    1. Thanks so much! I'm a hopeless collector of plants..... Can't help myself so I have an eclectic mix of many different things many of which aren't normally seen here in Zone 5...

  5. This is the time of year when I look forward to Deanne's photos most...the culmination of all your efforts. Yet, with our new blogs, I have a feeling that winter months will hold precious moments too! Birds, frost, paintings...

    1. Why thanks Marie, It's so true that the gardens here are so over the top abundant this time of year because of all the containers of tropicals and annuals... and yes, I'm planning on sharing my winter in my blind exploits as well.

  6. Such majestic beauty. I love that Sunpatiens as well.. I don't want to be a buzz kill but here in KS anyway My Monet reverts back to fully green at about the 5 year mark. This was not just a single occurrence but rather the whole variety it turns out. So my advice is to dig it out while it's small sand just use it as a screensaver.

Let know what you decide to do, please.
