A Most Beautiful Garden

One of the best things that happened to me after I started using the internet years ago is I met many gardening friends throughout the US and Canada through a perennials forum on a gardening site.  Fortunately for me a few of them live in New England and we've become fast friends and are able to visit back and forth and have garden parties from time to time. Yesterday we visited our friends the Anthony's who have a beautiful mature garden they've been working on for years. I believe the property was originally agricultural land so they started with a blank slate. They've done a wonderful job of creating undulating mixed borders that feature beautiful specimens of some of my favorites like Picea 'Skylands' and Cornus kousa 'Wolf Eyes' and many many more. Everywhere you look in this garden is another beautiful vignette. They combine trees, shrubs, perennials, tropicals, annuals and garden art with smatterings of container combinations with great flair. Always a visual treat to visit their gardens. Not to mention they are both wonderful cooks so the garden tour comes with a gourmet meal and lots of laughs with the best of friends. Thanks Monique and Les for a wonderful day.

  2. A most beautiful garden indeed! I'm jealous of those glorious hibiscus! Most years we don't get enough summer heat to make them really glorious. The internet is a wonderful tool for finding like-minded garden enthusiasts and seeing great gardens like this one! TFS!

    1. Thanks Kathy, I so miss you! Wish you lived closer. Would love to share adult beverages in the "Upstairs Cocktail Lounge" and commiserate on life's 'little' bumps'.

  4. I just love how every planting is so well thought out. All the way down to the structures complimenting the plantings - like the green and yellow variegated hosta, impatience and the yellow metal bench. So darn cute and creative!

  5. The combinations are not only beautiful - everything is huge and in great condition too! My Amaranth look like pikers by comparison. I love the coleus in the 2nd photo - I haven't seen it here.

  8. Next time I'm on the east coast I have to make time to visit both Monique's and Sue's gardens, if they'll let me. So beautiful and colorful. I love Coleus in pots, but they don't love me back. That golden-leaved shrub (Aralia cordata 'Sun King"?) with the dark-leaved Ligularia is fabulous.

  9. Thanks so much for posting these, Deanne! Their love of all kinds of plants really shines through in your photos. That angelica obviously loves their garden. And I think I see one of your faves, the Senorita series of cleome. I wonder how they overwinter that big Euphorb cotinifolia -- so much to see.

    1. You are very welcome Denise! I'm green with envy over their angelica. It seeds around everywhere and is so fabulous. I believe they just take the E. cotinifolia in the house and keep it in front of a window for the winter.
