My Favorite Plant in the Garden - This Week

Better late than never, LOL...

This sedum is a seedling that appeared about six years ago. I almost weeded it out but it was one of those weeding tasks I never got around to. Anyway the first time it bloomed I did a double then triple take. The flowers on this lovely plant are yellow with that beautiful foliage. A definite unique sedum I've not seen the likes of in any nurseries around here. There was a Sedum 'Purple Emperor' nearby so I'm assuming that is one of the parents to this plant. I like to call it 'Emperor's Gold'

Thanks to Loree from Danger Garden for hosting our weekly favorites.

  1. It's a beautiful sedum! Fortnam's Emperors Gold. Emperor Fortnam's Gold. I'm seeing a propagation and marketing project on the horizon! What a great surprise this seedling was. You see, procrastination does pay!

    1. LOL Peter! I hadn't thought of including my name in that. I'd love to find a propagation greenhouse that would want to develop this plant. It really is special. I've started cuttings from it and it stays true to form.

  2. The gold of those flowers with the purple leaves is fabulous! What great luck that it grew from seed.

  3. I vote for 'Fortnam's Gold.' I remember when you mentioned this sedum way back on the idyll threads, and I wasn't sure if it was stable and/or still surviving in your garden. Much prefer this to the usual pink flowers. You NEED to talk to Terra Nova, Deanne!

    1. Thanks Denise, It definitely is stable and reliable having survived six New England winters which is more than most of my Sedum 'Purple Emperors' did. I also took cuttings and have one that has been in the driveway garden for four years and is also stable. I did, in fact, contact Dan Heims from Terra Nova the year Idyllunion was in PNW and never heard back from him. I sent three emails with pictures as I recall so gave up after the third.

    2. I wonder if Monique has a scientist buddy who can do some cheap tissue culture? ;)

  4. 'Fortnam's Gold', perfect! I am not a fan of the normal pink flowers and see this as a huge improvement.

  6. 'Fortnam's Gold' is a fabulous plant, lucky both ways in that you have something so unique and beautiful, and that it didn't get weeded out. It look great with the golden yellow flower heads against the deep purple foliage.

  7. It's wonderful! I agree that you should attach your name to it. How tall is it?
