A Connecticut Garden Visit

What could be better than a perfect September day, good food, the best of friends and a gorgeous garden? Not much I can think of.  I'm so fortunate to live fairly close  to some pretty phenomenal gardeners and they are lucky to be a zone warmer than we are here in NH so they can grow some pretty wonderful things.  The Anthony Garden is an interesting, eclectic mix of perennials, trees, shrubs, annuals, temperennials and lots of unique garden art at every turn.  The property is beautifully divided into curving beds with hidden paths leading to quiet seating areas or a surprise focal plant or sculpture.

Stepping out on the deck is like walking into a gardeners paradise. This grouping is all in containers and forms a beautiful wall of color to enjoy while dining al fresco.

Taking a stroll off the deck leads you past this great combination featuring a beautifully grown Red Abyssinian Banana. The lovely honeysuckle seen above the banana climbs on a copper trellis and is a magnet for hummingbirds.

Tucked behind the banana is this delightful water feature

Another great combination....

Walking down toward the gardens you get a glimpse of great things to come....

Love, love, love this combination of Anemone with variegated Dogwood

Amaranthus, Canna and Tithonia

How come my Liriope never looks this good????

Love that the centers of the rudbeckia are the same color as the Colocasia 'Diamond Head'

Love the blue Caryopteris echoing the color of the blue container

The marvelous, packed with personality, famed canine model Oliver, Glen of Imaal Terrier

Perennial begonia, what's not to love?

Colocasia 'Thailand Giant'

Love this footie container

The Picea orientalis 'Skylands' is superb

Everywhere you look is another beautiful vignette

Perfect ceramic sculpture for the Lambs Ears

Love that Arundo donax ont he left of this image. Sadly that isn't hardy in Zone 5 where I live...

The Lespedeza thunbergii is gorgeous this time of year....

So it's back to the drawing board for me. Every time I visit this garden I plan for how I can add more shrubs and grasses to my gardens here....  I think it's time to dig up more of the front lawn..

    1. Such a great day. I so wish we all lived a bit closer together so we could do this at least once a month or so, and, we never had a garden soiree at your place this year. I missed relaxing on your gorgeous patio this year.

  2. Their borders are so well planted, thanks for sharing the pictures. Just beautiful. Do you know the name of the coleus that is almost orange? It's a stunner. I love the one on the far right in the first picture too. Great blog post Deanne!

    1. Thanks so much Drema! They really are incredible gardeners and it's a treat to be able to visit there. I think that coleus might be 'Rustic Orange'.

  4. This garden is definitively on my list of gardens I want to see someday! :-) Lovely! Not to mention, it fills me with envy - a lot of the plants there can only survive as potplants at the windowshelf here... *sigh*

  5. You have done a masterful job of capturing an incredible garden - from my visit there I recall being overwhelmed by the choices of vignettes and camera recording of amazing plant and shrub combos. And yet, it differs every year -- new combos and new art. Thanks for taking such lovely photos -- I am sure L&M appreciate having such lovely photos of their creative minds and hands' products! -- Cindy H.

    1. Thanks Cindy, I so wish we all didn't live so far away from each other. It would be so much fun if the whole band of Idylls could get together for our garden gatherings. L&M's gardens just keep getting better all the time.

  6. Yowsa! This is one great garden! That colocasia is HUGE! We can grow them here but we don't really have the summer heat that they love. Thanks for sharing this cool space. Yea for getting rid of lawn!

    1. Many thanks, yes indeed, it is one incredible garden and I so love to visit there. I'm lucky that I am friends with the gardeners. That Thailand Giant is a winner! We had some VERY hot weather this summer and all the tropicals here have put on quite a show.

  7. So glad you brought your camera! I hope my little varieg arundo grows up to look like that. The rhodochiton vine on the trellis is one of my fave summer vines. Love all the mature woody shrubs and trees as a backdrop. I had no idea there was so much space for Ollie -- what a fitting kingdom for him!
