A Garden Walkabout

Here we are at the beginning of September and the annuals and tropicals are over the top wonderful. I just love the extravagant (perhaps gaudy wouldn't be out of place as an adjective here) splashes of color in the gardens. Everywhere I look is another swath of color... What a treat to have this reward for the summer's care of the containers.  On the other hand the borders are winding down but there are still Phlox paniculata, persicaria, hydrangea, salvia, heliopsis, helianthus and more still blooming I'm pretty much out of energy for anything more than keeping things watered for another few weeks but I'm starting to plan the huge fall project of dismantling all the pots and getting the tender things in for the winter. But, that will be a next week project, for now I'm enjoying all this wonderful abundance and storing up images and memories for the cold winter months ahead...

Rose garden with Sunpatiens Variegated Salmon at its gaudy best.

The large planter next to the side door is completely filled with coleus, sweet potato vine, lantana, mandevilla, acalypha and more.

Large urn in the driveway garden.

Love that Pennisetum 'Vertigo'

Canna 'Pink Sunburst'

This Salvia coccinea self sowed from a plant I had in a container here last summer.

Aechmea blanchetiana

Love thsi fall combo of Chelone, Buddleia, Agastache 'Blue Fortune and Ceratostigma plumbaginoides

Hydrangea quercifolia 'Little Honey'

Patio containers -  That Acalypha obovata in the large urn is such a star performer

Fuchsia 'Beacon Rosa' standard with Neoregelia 'Donger' at its feet

Containers on the hot tub deck

A quiet corner in the shade

This Sanchezia in the blue pot is four years old now and about seven feet tall... What to do?

Abutilon 'Souvenir de Bonne', Sunpatiens Variegated White, Plectranthus 'Vanilla Twist' and Euphorbia 'Diamond Frost'.

Hydrangea 'Endless Summer' and Persicaria 'Golden Arrow'

What's not to love about these beauties?

    1. Bien sur Marie, Golden Arrow is a winner in all ways. I had the one near the hydrangea for several years and bought two more this summer.

  4. Hot damn Deanne, can your containers get any more fabulous ?? Spectacular every one, not to mention the photos..if you are doing this hand-held you have my extreme admiration. I would be in 7th heaven if I could take photos like that ..

    1. Why thanks so much Kathy! Yes all these images were hand held. The Canon 1Ds is very clean up to ISO 800. These were all taken at ISO 320 to 400 and no noise issues. At F8 it was giving me shutter speeds over 100 - combined with the IS features of the lens it's all good.

    1. Thanks so much Michelle, the containers all outdid themselves with the heat this summer. I get a bit melancholy this time of the year knowing it will all be gone in a month.

    1. Thanks Layanne, Those New Guineas are wonderful. I have to control myself so as not to over use them but I think I lost that battle this year, LOL

  7. I finally tried Persicaria 'Golden Arrow' this year. So far it's stayed compact unlike it's flopfest cousin 'Firetail'. Love that green, yellow and white container under the terrace garden birdbath!

    1. Thanks Sue, I'm really loving P. 'Golden Arrow' ~ I'd really like to repeat that Acalypha/Coleus/Geranium/Euphorbia/Fern combination next year. I'm hoping to convince Howard to keep most of my Acalyphas over the winter so I don't have to prune them back so hard.

  9. So impressed that you know the names of your bromeliads! And I really need to learn how to "talk camera" like you and Kathy. Always such an amazing tutorial on so many levels from you, Deanne. Good to see you enjoying your well-earned fall reward!

    1. Thanks Denise! I've kept all the tags in with the broms as I've bought them and as it's a recent addiction I haven't lost too many of the tags yet, LOL

Maybe we should have a camera workshop on one of our social evenings the next IU...

  11. What a wonderful WALAT; amazing how lush every thing looks at this time of year, Deanne. But I know that has a lot to do with that water wand that's attached to the end of your hand.... Thanks for recording such a lovely lovely meander. Cindy H.
