A Few Random Images

It's been a roller-coaster of a week here and I haven't been able to spend as much time in the gardens as I'd like. My husband had a bicycling accident and will need surgery to repair his quadriceps tendon. So, the gardens are going to wait a while longer for my attention. Fortunately they do seem to cruise along with minimal TLC this time of the year. If you look closely the daylilies need deadheading, there is a bit of crabgrass poking its head up here and there but the overall affect is still pretty. I had a bit of time yesterday morning and decided to do a walkabout with camera in hand and snapped a few things that caught my eye.

I really love this new cordyline. Unfortunately it didn't come with a tag but looks like Cordyline 'rubra'

The large front planter is filling in nicely. I gave the coleus and ipomoea a haircut the other day to balance things a bit better. I'm looking forward to the Mandevilla 'Alce Dupont' filling in the trellis.
The Thunbergia grandiflora vine is getting huge.

Some of the begonia collection. They are very happy this year

Love the form of this echeveira

The purple pot in the Driveway Garden has filled in nicely although the red coleus planted in that arrangement has failed to meed expectations.

Daylily 'Pastel Classic' in front of Spirea 'Ogon'

I just removed some of those dwarf iris and planted Eucomis 'Oakhurst'

Echinacea 'Pink Poodle' with Hydrangea 'Bobo'

Love that Echinacea 'Supreme Cantaloupe'

Alium 'Millenium', Nepeta 'Walker's Low', Amsonia, Angelica

  2. No disclaimers needed, Deanne - your garden is looking spectacular! I can't get over that Cordyline. I hope your husband recovers quickly from his injury - visiting doctors and hospitals isn't the way to spend the remainder of the summer.

    1. Thanks Kris, I adore that Cordyline. I wish I could get a name on it. I've got a couple of them and am planning to keep them over winter if I can. One of the 'I have to save this one' category

    1. Thanks Kathy, I cracked up laughing when I read, "Oh the Driveway Garden" I felt like you were right at my side saying that. The Thunbergia vine is on the trellis in the rose garden. I had to cut everything off that trellis in the spring so Doug could rebuild it. I planted theThunbergia to provide quick coverage for this year and it has met expectations. I can't wait to see it blooming. It's my understanding it blooms in the fall. We'll see

  6. Sorry to hear that your husband hurt himself!!!! Wishing him well!!! The garden looks beautiful- I love all the color combos. The Begonias have always been a classic favorite of mine- my mother has them all over the place at her house in Houston. They always remind me of home.

  7. Finding a favorite in your garden is futile, but that driveway garden, the purple pot, has to be singled out. That's awful about Doug's accident. Marty is on his bike a lot too, and this town is getting crazy with the pedestrians/bikes/cars all sharing the road, and most of us being idiots, of course. At least you've got an amazing place for him to recuperate. Maybe he can manage a small watering can at the same time...kidding! My very best to him as he heals up.

  10. I have admired your driveway garden for years and years, from way over on Gardenbuddies. It has certainly changed a lot since i first saw it! I notice you changed out the tricolored ajuga for that gorgeous and rich colored one, it's spectacular with your pot. The pot, too, is different, and I love it! I have tried several times to grow ajuga, supposedly a very easy plant to grow, but every time it's died. Crazy! I would love to see more pictures of the driveway garden!

    1. Thanks Leslie! I've been thinking of doing a post on the Driveway Garden and it's changes over the years. We've gotten some neighbors who've trashed the house and lawn next door and I've been planting taller and taller plants in the garden to mask the mess over there. That ajuga is "Black Scallop'. The voles ate the entire patch of A. 'Burgundy Glow' a few years ago so I switched out to the 'Black Scallop' for a change.

  11. Is that the Cordyline I have? Can't get that Thunbergia vine to grow but I planted it late and I think it's getting too much shade. Everything looks great! What a fantastic time of the year for the garden!

    1. Thanks Sue, yes, if you bought that Cordyline at Howard's this spring it's the same one I have here. I can't believe your Thunbergia vine won't grow, mine is a monster and I'm having to hack away at it to keep it off the shutters and electric wires.
